Shanghai - Song Yue Lou (松月楼)

*picture taken from guoli web*

The last of my shanghai stint was at Song Yue Lou Vegetarian restaurant. This restaurant has been in operations since 1910 and is still seeing brisk business to date. I guess its also because of its strategic location where it is the only veg place available for tourists in that vincinity. Anyway, it is located along the old streets of Yu yuan and the old buildings of the Cheng Huang temple which is a famous tourist attraction.

Abalone mushrooms with brocolli

A pretty normal dish that can hardly go wrong. As mentioned in my previous china posts, I love how fresh vegetables are in China perhaps due to the fact that they are cooked at most 1-2 days late. We will never get such freshness in SG.

Spicy sauce Fish

Was looking for some spice but was truely shocked by how spicy this was! Totally suited my taste but may not be good for the weak stomach. If you refer to the green little things in this dish, they are not green peas, but little green chili, and there were tons of them in this dish alone. The sauce was special with this spicy sichuan flavour. Fish wise, nothing much, as it was the usual beancurd sheet-made fishes that we can get in most suppliers' stores. Great to go with rice.

Crab Roe beancurd

A total disappointment, as I was not able to make out what the orangey spread was. Doesnt taste like carrot or mock floss. This dish was soaked in oil and was tasteless. Perhaps its a local dish which I was not able to appreciate. Xun was telling me that the crab roe at Gong De Lin was much better, a pity a didnt get a chance to taste it.

Price wise, I couldnt recall each individual rate, but it was around RMB 30 per dish. They also do sell economical dishes like noodle soup at RMB 25 per bowl. Do note that a lot of dishes are done using gluten. Famous Dish: Vegetarian Bun

Shanghai - Hao Niang Niang Vegetarian Restaurant (好孃孃素食馆)

Apologies for the late post. Justice&equality, here's any restaurant I went to when I was in Shanghai then. Its located in the "Hong Kou" district. Nonetheless, there is phamplets available for you at the Shanghai Expo to let you know the vegetarian places in the city area. However if you do travel out of the city, you may need to search online for more. This restaurant I went to was in the dianping website as I was staying in one of the 3 star hotel there. It is located directly opposite the CBD area (Lu Jia Zhui).
Went with Bro Xun one of the nights.
Veg Sausage with Beans CNY 26

It is always better to look at the pictures before you order, as the english translate of the dish doesnt describe the dish correctly. Again, it features my favourite sausage of all times. Sadly this was a tad too oily.

Spicy Chicken CNY 28

I wanted something spicy and hence ordered this dish. Goes really well with rice.

The exterior of the rest. I guess the only bad point is that it is not near any MTR stations, hence you may need to take a cab there.

Shanghai - Zao Zi Shu Vegetarian Restaurant (枣子树)

I've always raved about the food at this restaurant but didnt have a chance to come back here since the start of my blog. This is still the only vegetarian place that made me crave for its food since I came back to Singapore. Went with my colleagues when I was working as an Intern then and I've brought many people to this place since. Started in 2001, this restaurant has since developed from the 3 restaurants in Shanghai itself, to another 2 outlets to other provinces via the franchising model.
The name "Zao Zi Shu" (枣子树) has a simliar pronounciation to "Zao Chi Su" (早吃素) which is in fact encouraging people to start the vegetarian diet. Glad that I managed to come back here as I was on company budget.

The exterior of the restaurant

I've always liked it that the USP is selling the vegetarian notion as a "lifestyle". In addition, this was the only place I visited that does not take in reservations (unless you have more than 10 pax) and you would have to queue if the place is full. I went to the "Huai Hai" (淮海) outlet and perhaps due to its strategic location, it is always fully occupied even on a weekday.

Veg Sausage (长相思) CNY 18

I was so glad to be able to sample when I was in zhuhai. Tastes chewy as usual and superb with the special chili sauce. It is basically made with soy protein and konnyaku.

Beancurd Roll

It is common in most Shanghai menus to offer something called "冷菜" and "热菜" meaning Cold and Warm dishes. I didn't quite understand initially but was later told by my colleagues that cold dishes are similar to our starters or appetitzers that usually they go with beer. Sometimes the cold dishes are also uncooked. As for this place, what I reckon is the dishes can be served cold hence they are placed under the cold category. 4 of us ladies finished a total of 2 cold dishes and 5 hot dishes that night. This special dish is done using beancurd sheets wrapped with assorted mushrooms, fungus and carrots. Pretty chewy and wasn't too saltish.

Black Pepper Steak

I believe the mock meat can be brought from most vegetarian suppliers, stir fried with black pepper sauce and capcicums. Tastes similar to those that we can find in SG. Im pretty surprised that my ex-colls who are non-vegetarians love it. Wasn't too saltish and we didn't have any rice.

Honey stewed Pork Ribs

This is also one of my favourite dish. The Pork Rib is made of mock meat wrapped with lotus roots. It is chewy and once you bite into it, the lotus roots has a crunchy sticky taste.

Bamboo Shoots with Spinach (芦笋菠菜)

My coll ordered this dish. Doesn't look appealing but it does tastes well. The bamboo shoots were really fresh. It is definitely a healthier dish than any of the above as this is steamed and then served with the spinach gravy. Crunchy and healthy. Suitable for non-mock eaters.

Chili Fish (辣子鱼)

I was craving for spicy dishes but this wasn't spicy enough, but appealing. A pity I didn't realise that this picture doesn't show the "fish". Anyway, the fish is made of beancurd sheets and seaweed (the usual ones you can find in SG), and served with a uniquely not too spicy chili sauce. The sauce is made of fermented beans, crushed tofu, chili, capcicums and perhaps other unknown ingredients which I was not able to make out. A good gravy to go with rice and definitely not spicy.

Seafood Tofu

After all the saltish and flavourful dishes above, this tofu dish does tastes a little too bland. Nothing special as it is served with mock seafood (made from konnyaku), ginko nuts and capicums. Non-fried and a healthy option.

I do not recall the prices of each dish but we paid less than RMB 200 for 4 of us. All in all this is a place that is worth going if you do visit Shanghai as you would like the style and food they are selling. I love this place so much that I emailed them to request for a franchise in SG, sadly however, they didn't reply me. Definitely can be compared to our top veg restaurants like Ling Zhi and Grand Court in SG. If you do have any interest in this biz, do let me know, perhaps we can work something out... In addition, the menu changes every month, hence you do not get bored of the dishes here!

Shanghai - New Age Veggie (新素代 @ Zheng Da Outlet)

I was quite blessed to be able to travel for work to Beijing. Hence I took the opportunity to travel up to Shanghai on my own to visit my friends there. Definitely a fruitful trip as I missed the food in Shanghai most!
This place is introduced by my mum's friend as she works near this restaurant. I do adore this website (dianping.com) as it provides the most up-to-date vegetarian places that is available in China. Sadly this is not available in English, hence the closest you can use is via happy cow, which sometimes may not be accurate.
Nonetheless, I've tried the this place a couple of years back before I started my blog. It is good to see and hear from the waitress that they change the menu every couple of years, hence people do not get bored! New Age Veggie combines the outstanding cuisine style of Chinese vegetarian food with the modern technology of the west. The restaurant is decorated in a modern artistic and homey style, providing an excellent place for leisure time and dining place in Shanghai. Vegetarianism in Shanghai is generally marketed as being in trend, in fashion, in style, which I think is a good way to introduce this diet.
Exterior of the Restaurant

Vegetarian Shrimp Dumpling (素虾饺皇) 18RMB/5 pcs

Price is comparable to Singapore standard. However, this is one of the better dumplings I've sampled. The dumpling skin is really smooth and chewy which is totally translucent when served. This is comparable to the "har kow" we can find in most dim sum places. I was really happy to try it as the fillings within is really interesting - comprises of mixed veg and mock veg prawns (which is made from soy protein). Tastes like the "real" one esp with the red vinegar.

Black Pepper Steak

I couldn't remember the price of this dish, but it was around SGD 10 bucks. Cindy was telling me that this is the chef's recommendation and is a "Must try" hence we ordered this dish. Served on the hot plate is this nicely presented pieces of "non-rare" steaks. I'm not sure if this is homemade or gotten from suppliers as I've eaten many different types of steaks before. The sauce is definitely worth a try as it was spicy and goes well with plain rice! Aint too bad if you are into mock meats.

Stir Fried Brocolli

Time for some non-mock meat items... fresh stir fried brocolli! Really soft and fresh.

Stone Pot Rice (石锅饭)

Cindy was telling me this dish was not bad as the rice is really fragrant. I find it kind of interesting, as the waitress poured a special sauce into the really hot stone pot and started mixing the ingredients into the rice. A pity i didnt get to take the waitress's face as she was camera shy. Anyway, the above pic shows the "end result". Not exactly a korean style bibimbap, but its similar, as everything is mixed together like fried rice. There are many ingredients in this pot which includes mushrooms, veg ham, green chopped veg and some mock meats.

Ma-Po Spicy Beancurd CNY 28

I was missing spicy stuff as I was not able to find it in Beijing. Hence was telling Cindy I wanted something spicy. If you have noted, Im a mega fan of spicy dishes. Hence decided to order this dish, which is the Ma Po Tofu, also known as beancurd cooked in the spicy bean sauce.

Was totally satisfied as this was really spicy and the beancurd was soft. One improvement I had in mind was the translation done in the menu, as it does not usually bring out the jest of the dishes, and I guess most people could only try out the dishes by looking at the pictures.

All in all, Shanghai is one of the most developed metropolitan city that offers a lot of options for us today. As China develops to become the strongest nation on the globe, it definitely has created opportunities to bring the notion of vegetarianism to greater heights. I guess this is a good news and places like such should open more, allowing better ease too~
