素满圆 (Su Man Yuan Vegetarian)

Was chatting with the owner the other day and found that they have opened more outlets these couple of years. This is from the Suntec outlet and is ALWAYS packed with long queues during lunch time. The Brown Rice is one of the best so far.

Black Pepper Chicken with Rice $4

You may choose either brown or white rice. The serving is really big that I could not finish the whole plate too. The black pepper sauce may be a little spicy for some, but it is totally marinated into the chicken slices which makes you want to crave for more!

2. Tiong Bahru Food Court, Level 3

Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2007

Last week, my parents and I went to Phuket for the vegetarian festival (see here for the info). The food there was not only AWEsome, it was almost available everywhere in Phuket town.

Vegetarian Thai Popiah 10Bhat (SGD$0.40)

Really Spicy, but its crunchy on the inside, soft on the outside.

Vegetarian Kway Tiao Soup 30Bhat (SGD $1.20)

Almost available in most stalls. The soup is made from white raddish and its sweet. Ingredients wise is full of veg and tofu.

Vegetarian Fried Mee 12Bhat (SGD 0.60)

The chili and peanuts made this dish heavenly! Though not much ingredients and only vegetables, this packet of fried mee makes you want to have more!

Vegetarian Nou Hiang & Wanton 10Bhat Each (SGD $0.40)

The Nou Hiang (五香卷) tastes really good with the taro inside. Comes with a special thai sauce. As for the wanton, its good given the price and standard. However, of course my recipe is better. heh.

Vegetarian Mixed Vegetables Rice

Most stalls sell the mixed vegetables rice (什菜饭). My parents and I ordered dishes as shown (2 plates of veg, 2 sausages, and 1 fish) total at 145Bhat (SGD $6.60). Cheap like crazy! Also, the FISH is really good, as it is self-made!

Thai Dessert - Mango with Glutinous Rice 50Bhat (SGD $2.00)

A not-to-be missed dessert after all the snacks and meals. I loved the mango as it was really sweet.

Overall, I personally feel it is a very worthed trip to phuket during the vegetarian festival (held only 9 days annually) as food is not only interesting, but tasty as well. Also, you may also take part in the parades whereby the devotees pierce almost anything through their bodies and walk for hours as part of purification. Just look for any stall with the yellow flag (九皇盛会), and you will be amazed with the varieties available. (not suitable for vegans though) A pity that I was unable to feature all the foods as there were simply too many to try. I would want to go back again next year!

Note: If you are in for an indulgence, JWMarriot hotel also had a special vegetarian menu (featuring sharksfin) during this period. I did not go there but read from a magazine in the hotel.

Sui Yuan Vegetarian Stall (随缘素食) - MOVED to Buona Vista!

I heard this has moved to Holland Drive Blk 44!
This is one of the place I always patronise after facials at Tiong Bahru. The prawn noodle is a must try!
Vegetarian Prawn Noodle (素虾面) $3.50

Of all the places which I have tried prawn noodles at, I believe this stall is one of the best. Serving is big and the soup is special. The lady serving is also quite nice as I have requested to have the noodles and soup separated. Not all stalls allow that, especially when there is a queue! Other than this, the stall also sells other food like hokkien noodles or tom yum soup noodles. My brother-in-law loves the dried noodles, which I must also admit their wanton is tasty too!

Tom Yam Soup with Rice ($3.50)

*Picture from Clarice

Thank you clarice for providing another picture from Sui Yuan. She tried the Tom Yam Soup the other day and commented that it tasted sour and spicy enough. Worth the price as there are many ingredients in the soup.

Lao Di Fang Vegetarian Cafe (老地方素食)

Lao Di Fang on the Move again! Relocated Add below~

Anyway, last night as we had a craving for the food there, my second sis decided to give us all a treat. Woohooo!

Braised Beef Noodles (红烧面 ) $6.50

This is my family's all time favourite. My mum loved the Ma La (spicy) version. The soup is tasty and the noodles is chewy. Also, there is a lot of "beef" slices given. Fret not, it is not mock meat here. The "beef" is in fact made from mushrooms. Therefore, if you are not into mock meats, this is a good choice.

Kampong Chicken Rice Bento (山鸡排饭) $6.50

Other than noodles, the bentos totally captivated our hearts. Served from a nice box (as shown), not only the chicken is tantalising, the grilled corn is superb too! Nonetheless, the cafe serves free soup which you may help yourself to as many bowls as possible. There is also watermelon as your fruit after meal.

Pork Ribs Rice Bento ( 排骨饭) $6.50

The rice served is mixed with brown rice, which makes it a healthy choice too! Of course, there are other non-fried choices like the Eel Fish Rice Bento.

Braised Tofu Claypot (红烧豆腐煲) $8.80

As my dad is a traditional uncle, he is not very into bentos but he loves steamy hot dishes like that which he can go with Rice. The dishes here are not bad, but I would highly recommend the Beef and Tofu Stew (牛腩豆腐煲) as it is quite unusual to get it elsewhere.

Other foods~

(Picture taken from my god brother chuanz bloggie)

Side Dishes

Went there again the other day with my colls and irene loves the Cold Tofu So much that she took a total of 5 pictures (with different styles..). Cold Tofu is a dish where they serve homemade special sauce on fresh tofu (uncooked). It tastes heavenly as the sauce is not too saltish but at the same time the tofu is smooth and melts directly. On the right side is the Abalone Muchroom (fried). It is sprinkled with chili powder to make it tastier.

Miao Xin Vegetarian Stall (妙馨素食)

Have been eating from this stall since I was young. My sisters adore the laska which is only available on weekends. So i took a picture of it when my mum brought for me yesterday.
Laksa $2

Grade: 3.5/5

Am I making you hungry Loonie tart? I wouldnt say that this is the best laksa available. However, it just seem to have some kind of charm (感情/习惯maybe) as we have been eating from the stall for more than a decade. The auntie at the stall is quite nice as she gives quite a generous serving if you pack home. And at 2 bucks? Thats a rare find these days. Other than laksa, the normal food it is selling is the mixed vegetables and rice or you may want to opt for dried noodles.

Veg' Out at Genting (Malaysia)

Over the weekend, while I was at JB attending the wedding dinner, my sis Loonie tart went to Genting for the gamble of her life. Here's her reviews from the vegetarian food in Genting:

1. Kopitiam @ First World Hotel 4th floor
I think this is the only ‘pure’ vegetarian food available at Genting. I was there for my meals for consecutively 2 days. The food is good! I tried the vege mutton curry rice and fried kway teow, it was very tasty. Compared to other cut-throat prices at other food outlets, the price was considered quite cheap and you can add up to RM12.90 for a meal (with soup and drink).

2. Fast Food
Some meals, I took fries and banana pie from Mac Donalds. The banana pie is yummy! Tastes like Goreng Pisang. There is also Pizza Factory at Genting Hotel and Pizza Hut at the indoor theme park at First World Hotel.

3. Tong Luo Wan Cha Chan Ting (Hong Kong Café)
This HK Café is located just next to Kopitiam at 4th Floor. There are vegetarian options on its menu. There is fried rice, braised beancurd with rice, fried noodles etc. They also indicated that they use vegetable oil and separate set of cookery for vegetarian items. I only had toast for breakfast there so I didn’t try the food but was pleasantly surprised at my findings.

Overall, Genting do not have many vegetarian food options but the restaurants were quite receptive to preparing veg food such as fried rice if you are not that particular.

A pity that we do not have any pictures to offer this time round. Nonetheless, genting has still passed the "vegetarian-friendly" grade! Be sure to win some money too!

18 Lohan Vegetarian Delight (十八罗汉斋食馆 ) - CLOSED DOWN

Last night my family and I went to this place for dinner after reading the comments on veggie society. This food (煮炒) stall is located in one of the coffee shop in Bedok South. We ordered a total of 4 dishes and 1 soup at a cost of $30. Rice is at 50 Cents per plate. Hence the total cost was $32.50, which I thought was quite a good deal if you are in for an affordable meal. Most importantly, the food is served Hot.
Grade: 3/5

Out of the 4 dishes ordered, I would recommend the sambal kangkong ($5) and Claypot Tofu ($8) as the taste is above average. As for the sweet and sour fish, though claimed to be homemade, we felt that it was not worth the price as there was only at most a mere 10 small pieces of fish (which you may see in the picture, the fishes were not even visible!) at a cost of $7.

Other than that, the food is served quite fast and no service charged is required. I would recommend this place if you are staying in the east and in for a cheap deal. Of cos' this stall is much more expensive if you are comparing with the stall at Blk 515.
